Crystal Weapons

The Crystal Weapons are crafted by the Araeoin, a species of gnoll who live in the carved out labyrinths beneath the Selur Mountains. The city of the Araeoin owes its greatness to the plentiful veins of Selrite, a type of crystal that grows within the mountains. The architecture of the Araeoin displays their expertise in design. The streets are lit by lamps of softly glowing crystals, tools and even some buildings are also made of crystal. Though untouched by the sun's warm hands, there remains a gentle glow that resonates within the cavernous walls. So it is no surprise they would use Nyorite in the crafting of their weapons as well.

Selrite is a unique crystal in that it actively grows within the earth. Provided a vein is not completely mined, it will regenerate over time. It comes in many brilliant colors, from blues, greens, to oranges and even purples; they bathe the city in soft hues. The crystal lends itself quite well to smithery, allowing it to be manipulated into various shapes and sizes. Despite the variety of colors, the properties of the crystal itself do not vary. However, the Council of Elders in an effort to conserve resources, decreed the "proper" use of Selrite in regards to smithery: yellow is to be used for shields, purple for axes and swords, blue for spears, daggers and arrows, and green for maces and hammers. Other weapons are not created by raw crystal rather have orbs of blue crystal imbued with magic and fused into them. Imbuing the crystal dulls its glow considerably and gives it an appearance more like solid stone than crystal.

The Araeoin also use a great deal of wood and stone to bind their weapons together. Once one is completed, it is painted, using a dye, with many small horizontal, vertical, or diagonal stripes. These are to symbolize the scars that come with battle. A people with a dark history of brutal war, they honor those that have, and will fall, brother and enemy alike with these marks. There is no way to truly clean a bloody sword, and while scars are not always visible, they are ever-present, a reminder of what has and what will come.
